Terramar: Land and Sea

Surf and/or Turf was a surprising episode. It seems to deal directly with the problem of separated parents and a child's feeling of divided love. Terramar's father lives as a hippogriff on Mount Aris, while his mother lives in the ocean of Seaquestria as a sea pony. They're separated physically and emotionally, but still love their children, and Terramar feels he must decide which to live with permanently. Perhaps it's that decision on whether to return to Mount Aris that split up the parents to begin with?
